Before
anything else.
If you smell gas,
or smell rotten eggs anywhere in the house: do not touch the thermostat, any
light switch, or your phone indoors. Leave the house, take everyone with you,
and from outside call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045 or 911.
If a carbon
monoxide detector is sounding: get everyone outside into fresh air immediately,
then call 911. Do not go back in to investigate.
Neither of these
is a troubleshooting situation. Everything below assumes you have no gas smell
and no CO alarm.
It
is the first genuinely cold morning of the season. You push the thermostat up,
wait for the familiar rumble, and get nothing. Or you get a click, a whir, and
then silence.
Here
is the part that surprises people: a large share of the no-heat calls we take
in September and October are not broken furnaces. They are systems that were
switched off, tripped, restricted, or blocked over the summer, and the fix
takes a homeowner about ninety seconds.
Working
through the seven checks below costs you fifteen minutes. If one of them solves
it, you have your heat back tonight instead of waiting for a service window. If
none of them do, you will be able to tell the technician exactly what you
already ruled out, which usually shortens the visit.
Every check here is safe for a homeowner to perform. Nothing below involves opening a gas line, touching wiring, or defeating a safety device. Where the line is, this article says so.
Why Furnaces Fail on the First Cold Night
Your
furnace sat idle from roughly April to October. In that time, three things
happened in a typical Long Island basement.
Dust
accumulated. Your blower ran all summer for air conditioning, pulling household
dust through the same cabinet the furnace lives in. It settled on burners, on
the flame sensor, and into the filter.
Moisture
worked in. Long Island summers are humid, and basements more so. Motor bearings
sat still while lubricant migrated and condensation formed on components.
Something
got switched off or moved. Someone flipped what looked like a light switch. A
breaker tripped during a July thunderstorm and nobody noticed because nothing
else was on that circuit. Boxes got stacked against the return.
Then
the system is asked to go from cold and dormant to full combustion in a single
evening. Every weak point is tested at once. That is why furnace not turning on
peaks as a search term in the same two weeks every autumn.
7 Things to Check Before You Call for Service
Work
through these in order. The first three solve more calls than the other four
combined.
1. Your thermostat — mode, batteries, and schedule
Start
here every time. It is the most common cause and the easiest to overlook.
1.
Check the mode. It must be on HEAT, not OFF, not COOL,
not FAN. If you switched it to OFF at the end of summer, this is your answer.
2.
Raise the setpoint by at least five degrees above the
current room temperature. A one-degree bump may not be enough to trigger a call
for heat.
3.
Replace the batteries. A dying battery in a
battery-powered thermostat produces exactly this symptom — a display that looks
normal but cannot signal the furnace. Replace them even if the screen looks
fine.
4.
Check the schedule. Smart and programmable thermostats
often still hold last winter's schedule, or a summer schedule that never calls
for heat. Override it manually and see if the system responds.
5.
Look for a blank screen. No display at all usually
means dead batteries or a tripped furnace door switch, which is Check 3 below.
6.
Wait five minutes. Many systems have a built-in delay
before the burner fires. Do not conclude it failed after thirty seconds.
If
you have a smart thermostat that lost its C-wire power over the summer, it may
run on its internal battery until that runs down. A Nest or Ecobee showing a
low-battery or wiring alert is telling you something real.
2. The furnace power switch and the breaker
7. Find the switch near the furnace. It often has a plain metal cover plate.
8.
If it is off, turn it on. Wait ten minutes and try the
thermostat again.
9.
If you cannot find it, go to your electrical panel and
look for a breaker labeled furnace, heat, HVAC, or burner.
10.
If the breaker is tripped, reset it fully — push it
firmly to OFF first, then back to ON. A half-tripped breaker often looks like
it is on.
11.
For oil systems, there is usually a second switch,
often red, at the top of the basement stairs or on the wall near the burner.
One
important caution: if the breaker trips again immediately after you reset it,
stop. Do not keep resetting it. A repeatedly tripping breaker means a short or
a failing motor drawing too much current, and repeated resets risk an
electrical fire. That is a call, not a fix.
3. The blower door safety switch
This
one solves a surprising number of calls, and virtually no homeowner knows about
it.
Your
furnace has a removable panel covering the blower compartment. Behind it is a
small plunger switch that must be depressed for the furnace to run. It exists
so the system cannot operate with the panel off.
If
anyone opened that panel over the summer — to change a filter, to look at
something, or a technician during an AC service — and did not seat it perfectly,
the switch stays open and the furnace will not fire. Some thermostats go
completely blank when this happens.
12.
Locate the removable panel on the front of the furnace.
13.
Push it firmly into place. It should sit flush against
the cabinet on all sides.
14.
Some panels need a slight lift-and-push to engage. Make
sure the latches or screws are secure.
15.
Try the thermostat again.
4. The air filter
A
filter that has not been changed since spring is restricted enough to shut the
system down on a safety limit.
Here
is the mechanism, because it explains the symptom. A clogged filter chokes
airflow across the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger overheats. The high-limit
switch senses that and shuts the burner off to prevent damage. The blower keeps
running to cool things down, which is why the classic symptom is furnace
blowing cold air rather than nothing at all.
16.
Find the filter, usually in a slot at the return duct
or inside the blower compartment.
17.
Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you cannot
see light through it, replace it.
18.
Install the new one with the airflow arrow pointing
toward the furnace.
19.
Wait fifteen minutes for the system to reset, then try
again.
While
you are there, walk the house and confirm supply and return vents are not
blocked by furniture, rugs, or boxes. Closing off too many rooms creates the
same restriction as a dirty filter.
5. Gas supply, or oil tank level
Obvious,
but worth ruling out before you pay for a visit.
For
natural gas:
20.
Test another gas appliance. Light a stove burner. If it
lights normally, you have gas to the house.
21.
If nothing gas-powered works, the issue is your supply,
not your furnace. Call National Grid.
22.
Locate the gas shutoff valve on the pipe feeding the
furnace. When the handle runs parallel to the pipe, the valve is open.
Perpendicular means closed.
23.
If it is closed, do not open it yourself unless you
know why it was closed. Someone may have shut it deliberately.
For
oil:
24.
Check your tank gauge. Running out of oil is one of the
most common no-heat causes on Long Island, and it does not feel possible until
it happens.
25.
If you are out, schedule a delivery. After a refill,
the system usually needs to be primed and restarted by a technician, since air
enters the line when a tank runs dry.
26.
Check that the oil valve at the tank and at the burner
are both open.
If
you have propane, check the tank level gauge the same way.
6. The condensate drain and float switch
This
one applies to high-efficiency condensing furnaces, generally anything 90% AFUE
or higher, and it is the check almost no online guide covers.
A
high-efficiency furnace produces water as a byproduct of combustion. That water
drains through a PVC line, often into a condensate pump or a floor drain. If
that line clogs with algae or sediment over the summer — which happens
constantly in humid Long Island basements — water backs up. A float switch
senses the backup and shuts the furnace down to prevent an overflow.
The
result is a furnace that will not fire, with no other symptom.
27.
Look for a small white PVC pipe running from the
furnace to a drain or a pump.
28.
Check for standing water in or around the furnace base,
in the drain pan, or around the condensate pump.
29.
If you see water backed up, that is very likely your
answer.
30.
If a condensate pump is present, check that it is
plugged in and that its own float is not stuck.
31.
Clearing a clogged drain line is a legitimate DIY job
with a wet vacuum on the outlet end, but if you are unsure, this is a quick and
inexpensive service call.
Note
that your air conditioner shares this drain on many systems. If your AC was
leaking or shutting off during the summer, the same clog is now stopping your
heat.
7. The diagnostic light on the furnace
This
is the check that turns you into an informed caller instead of a guessing one.
Nearly
every furnace built since the mid-1990s has a small LED behind a clear sight glass
on the control board, visible through a small window on the front panel. It
blinks a pattern that identifies the specific fault.

Find the small round or rectangular window on the
furnace front panel.
33.
Look inside for a blinking light, usually green, red,
or amber.
34.
Count the blink pattern carefully. It might be three
short flashes, a pause, then three more. Or a slow steady blink.
35.
Open the upper access panel — this one is safe to
remove and is not the blower door — and find the legend printed inside. It
lists what each code means for your specific model.
36.
Write down the code and what it says.
Common
patterns include pressure switch faults, flame sensor failure, limit switch
open, and ignition lockout. If the code points to a flame sensor, that is one
of the most frequent and least expensive repairs there is.
Even
if you cannot interpret the code, reading it to us on the phone tells us what
part to bring on the truck. That often means one visit instead of two.
Some
systems enter a hard lockout after several failed ignition attempts. Cutting
power at the switch from Check 2 for thirty seconds and restoring it clears the
lockout and allows one more attempt. If it locks out again, stop and book
heating services. Repeated attempts on a system that is failing to ignite are
not safe.

What NOT to Do
These
four cause more damage than the original problem.
Do not keep pressing the reset button
This
matters most on oil systems. Every press of the burner reset injects more
unburned oil into the combustion chamber. Press it repeatedly and you have a
chamber full of oil that can ignite violently when the burner finally fires.
One reset press. If it does not stay running, stop.
Do not bypass a safety switch
Do not run space heaters unattended
Space
heaters are reasonable for one night. Keep them three feet from anything
flammable, plug them directly into a wall outlet and never into a power strip
or extension cord, and turn them off when you sleep or leave. Portable heaters
are a leading cause of home fires every winter.
Do not ignore a CO alarm because the furnace is off
A
carbon monoxide alarm means leave the house and call 911, regardless of what
you think the source is. A furnace that failed to ignite properly can still
produce CO, and so can a water heater, a fireplace, or a car left running in an
attached garage.
When to Stop and Call a Technician
Stop
troubleshooting and book service if any of these are true.
•
You smell gas at any point — leave first, call from
outside
•
A CO detector has sounded
•
The breaker trips again after one reset
•
You see soot, scorch marks, or melted wiring around the
furnace
•
Water is pooling around the furnace base
•
The system fires and then shuts off repeatedly within a
few minutes
•
The burner flame is yellow or orange instead of blue
•
You hear a loud boom or delayed ignition when it fires
•
You have worked through all seven checks with no result
That
last one is not a failure. It means the problem is inside the system, where
diagnosis requires a multimeter and a combustion analyzer.
What It Usually Turns Out to Be
When
a September no-heat call is not one of the seven items above, it is most often
one of these. All are routine repairs, and all are things a fall inspection would
have caught.
•
Dirty flame sensor. The system ignites, runs for a few
seconds, then shuts down. A cleaning is one of the least expensive repairs in
HVAC.
•
Failed hot surface ignitor. You hear the inducer motor
run and a click, but no ignition. Ignitors are a wear item with a predictable
lifespan.
•
Stuck or failed pressure switch. Often caused by a
blocked flue or a disconnected hose, both worth taking seriously.
•
Failed inducer motor. Common after a long idle period,
and one of the reasons a September check catches things.
•
Bad capacitor or blower motor. The furnace calls for
heat but the blower never engages.
•
Cracked heat exchanger. Rare, serious, and the reason a
technician tests rather than guesses.
Every
one of these except the last is a same-visit repair in September, when parts
are in stock. In late November, common parts go out of stock regionally and the
same repair can take a week. That timing difference is the whole argument for a
furnace tune-up before the season starts.

When It Is the End of the System, Not a Repair
Occasionally
the honest answer is that the repair does not make sense.
A
furnace over twenty years old with a cracked heat exchanger cannot be repaired
safely, and heat exchanger replacement on equipment that age costs a meaningful
fraction of a new system while everything around it is the same vintage.
